BANOBRAS (Banco Nacional de Obras y Servicios Públicos de México, S.N.C., Mexico’s National Bank of Public Works and Services) has awarded SENER the contract to provide the specialized supervision services for the tunnels of the Durango-Mazatlán Highway in Mexico, as well as to perform the technical audits to ensure the safety of the Highway’s infrastructure, facilities and users.

This is a challenging project, as Durango-Mazatlán is considered to be a pioneering highway for Mexico due to the number of tunnels, equipment and installations. It has 55 tunnels, nine of which have Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), such as ventilation, fire protection, and surveillance and control, as well as lighting. These nine tunnels are all over 400 m long, with three of them reaching 800 m and one at 2,800 m.

SENER had already worked on this highway at the beginning, when it provided the technical consultancy services for monitoring the project and the electromechanical work in the tunnels, and machinery control rooms for the Mexican Department of Communications and Transport.

The purpose of this contract is to provide the highway operator with assistance in improving its operation and maintenance, and to achieve higher safety levels. To this end, the team from SENER shall be responsible for:

• Checking the flow of traffic and conditions on the highway and efficiently managing incidents, the quality of service offered to users, optimum conditions for preserving the highway’s installations, equipment and services, and preventive and corrective maintenance operations, both for infrastructures and installations.

• Providing consultancy services to establish the risk of traffic accidents, performing a technical road safety audit and field work for inventories. Furthermore, as the company responsible for Safety in the tunnels, it will carry out the first cold smoke test in them.
