Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) is European Space Agency’s flagship mission to explore the Jupiter System for a better understanding of the complex interaction between Jupiter and its icy moons Europa, Callisto and Ganymede.

For this Science phase, the JUICE spacecraft is equipped with a set of 10 different instruments. Among them are the J-MAG and the RPWI experiments, dedicated to magnetic and radio wave characterization.

In order to place the five instruments required for these experiments away from the magnetic disturbances of the spacecraft, SENER is developing a magnetometer boom. It is a 10.6 m structure made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) tubes and composed by three segments that remain stowed during the launch and, once in orbit, it is deployed by means of a deployment mechanism and a synchronizing mechanism.

The main challenges of the project for SENER are the total length of the boom, the magnetic cleanliness requirements, temperature range (over 500 ºC in the Multi-Layer Isolation or MLI protecting the CFRP tubes) and the mass. SENER is already working in the boom design and will deliver the flight model in 2019.
