In March, the Bokpoort concentrated solar plant was inaugurated near Upington town, in Northern Cape Province of South Africa. SENER was part of the construction consortium, developed for the Saudi group ACWA Power as a turnkey project. Bokpoort has required an investment of more than 300 million Euros. The opening ceremony was attended by the Trade & Industry Ministers of South Africa and Saudi Arabia, Rob Davies and Tawfiq al Rabiah, respectively. SENER Project Manager, Juan Granero, was also present.

The facility has a gross capacity of 55 MW and uses SENERtrough® parabolic trough collector technology, designed and patented by SENER, with a 1,300 MWht system of two energy storage tanks using molten salts that provide 9.3 hours of operation. The solar field of the plant consists of 180 loops, and its annual production will be over 230 GWh (net).

At present, SENER is developing a 100MW solar thermal complex at Kathu, a turnkey project for ENGIE. Along with Kathu and Bokpoort, SENER has a third solar thermal plant in South Africa. In these three projects, SENER supplies key technology such as the SENERtrough® parabolic trough collectors and the molten salt storage system that enables the plants to continue to produce electricity in the absence of solar radiation

Following the company’s philosophy for turnkey projects, SENER has stablished a strong commitment with the local community of Northern Cape, where are located the Bokpoort and Kathu plants. During the construction, workers and suppliers from the area are employed. Besides, SENER professionals on site have carried out, with the company’s support, several projects of social responsibility such as a transport service to children and adults with multiple (learning and physical) disabilities and a computing classroom, house restorations, delivery of clothing, shoes and toys, and other culture and leisure activities such as motivation talks for the youth. At the same time, SENER has made donations to the Topline, Wegdraai and Grootdrink medical centers and other local institutions.
